ALSO KNOWN AS THE FAYETTE COUNTY PAUPERS' CEMETERY
OR THE LA GRANGE POOR FARM CEMETERY
FAYETTE COUNTY, TEXAS
From the files of the Fayette Heritage Museum and Archives:
This cemetery is located near the city limits of La Grange on Mode Lane. It is enclosed by a hurricane fence and covers a little over an acre of land. Only five graves had headstones when this site was surveyed by Kathy Carter and Helen Muras on 10-25-1987. Additional names were brought in by Isaac Hughes on 5-15-1990. These names were found in Fayette County Court Records. More names were added 2/23/1993 by Kathy Carter from information found in a ledger from the courthouse. This ledger is entitled Record of Inmates in Fayette County Poor-House, Hospital & Asylum La Grange Texas. It covers the time period from 1-7-1902 until 3-24-1924. The ledger is in the archives. Some name and dates were corrected from information found in the Fayette County Death Records which were researched 2/23/1993. Not all names were researched.Deeds and other papers concerning this cemetery are located in the Judge's Office, Fayette County Courthouse.
Names may be misspelled and ages are approximate in some instances. Kathy Carter believes some of the ages listed indicate the age of the person at the time they began residing at the poor farm and a few of the people listed spent quite a few years there. [The list of burials at the Fayette Heritage Museum & Archives contains names not shown in the photos below.]
All of the markers in the La Grange Paupers' Cemetery were photographed in October 2007 by Stacy N. Sneed and transcribed by Connie F. Sneed and are shown below:
