PARK, FAYETTE COUNTY, TEXAS
The Hildebrandt Cemetery is located on the west side of FM 159, .4 mile south of the Fayetteville Y, and north of Park Road. The cemetery is the burial place for at least sixty African-Americans and probably many more. The graves are randomly arranged over a very large area, perhaps sixty yards by 150 yards, and was very poorly kept in the past. The area is fenced off with barbed wire, but there are quite a few toppled and broken stones. Many of these are homemade and inscribed by hand.
This site was surveyed in 1959 by Joe Cole and again in 1965 by Norman Krischke. Kathy Carter, Helen Muras and Annette Ruckert attempted to survey it in May 1990, but the cemetery was very overgrown and they were unable to locate many of the graves from the previous surveys. Much of the cemetery was mowed when Rox Ann Johnson visited in August 2006. While she was not able to locate nineteen markers from previous surveys, she was able to add over twenty names to the list below.
