Eilert Gerhard Brandt was born 4 December 1838 to Dietrich and Anna (Cornelius) Brandt near Langwarden, Staat Oldenburg, Germany. Langwarden is on the shore of the North Sea. He married Sophie Friedrich Wilhelme Westing 2 May 1865. Sophie Wilhelmine was born 15 September 1844 in the German State of Oldenburg. She was a daughter of William and Margarether (Bruennig) Westing. . . .
Eilert and Wilhelmine had twelve children, six of whom were stillborn or died young and are buried in Germany. The children were: 1. Daughter, born about February 1866, buried in Germany. 2. Son, born about June 1867, buried Germany. 3. Son, born about October 1869, buried Germany. 4. Heinrich Emil, born in 1871. 5. Geroge Frederich, born in 1872. 6. Son, born about November 1873, buried Germany. 7. Minna Johanna, born in 1876. 8. Son, born about November 1877, buried in Germany. 9. Frederich Wilhelm, born in 1879. 10. Theodore Henry, born in 1880. 11. Son, born about March 1882, buried in Germany. 12. George Hugo, born in 1886. The information on the six children buried in Germany was obtained from a Church Book in Germany by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur H. Brandt.
Eilert planned to go to America because of the high taxes and because of the conscription laws. Heinrich Emil Brandt was the first to go to America arriving at Galveston 3 October 1885 perhaps with the Henry Laturnus, Henry Breithaupt of John Ehlers family. The Laturnus and Breithaupt families lived on John Ehler's land south of the Holman Store. Henry Breithaupt is buried on this land; Henry Laturnus is buried at Breslau, Lavaca County. Also Frida, child of Henry and Mary (Breithaupt) Laturnus is buried on the land. H. Emil lived with the host family two years. George Frederich Brandt, second oldest, arrived at Galveston 1 October 1886, age 14 1/2 years. He, too, stayed with the host family. Later, when Eilert and the rest of the family arrived, the two boys joined them.
Eilert sold his land, house, crops and farm equipment in early 1888 and he and Wilhelmine, along with four children, Minna, Frederich, Theodore and George Hugo, emigrated from Germany aboard the Steamship Zeiler and arrived in Galveston 1 October 1888.
Eilert purchased 380 acres of land, according to Fayette County Deed Book 34, Page 344, in the Spencer A. Pugh League from Mrs. C. A. Burford for $5500.00 28 December 1888 and the land is in the Brandt family to this day. It was on this land that Eilert established the Brandt Family Cemetery.
The tombstone inscriptions in the cemetery show that it was started 28 June 1888 upon burial of Meta Wienken. The first burial of a Brandt was that of George Hugo who died 5 June 1889; he had been in Texas only 1 year, 2 months and 5 days.
There is a special small stone between Eilert's and Wilhelmine's headstones which reads: "Begrabnis Statte Fur Familie" - Burial Place for the Family. It is said that when Eilert was erecting this stone to mark the beginning of the cemetery, it fell and severed on of his fingers. He remarked that we was putting up a monument to a finger and the story prevails to this day.
Eilert was naturalized 5 June 1893 which included his entire family.
Text from the Historic Texas Cemetery marker:
BRANDT FAMILY CEMETERY
Eilert Gerhard Brandt and his wife, Sophie Friedrich Wilhelmine Westing Brandt, immigrated from Oldenburg, Germany to this area in April 1888. They purchased nearly 400 acres of land near the community of Pecan [Holman]. Just months later, in June 1888, they established this cemetery with the burial of Meta Wienken, who had cared for their sons H. Emil and George F. before the couple had arrived with four more of their children. Six others had been stillborn or died young and were buried in Germany. After her husband's death in 1919, Wilhelmine (d. 1924) sold the land to George and his wife, Julia, who built a home nearby. In the 1920s, George and Julia sold the property to their children.
In 1952, family members formed the Brandt Cemetery Association, which holds annual decoration days for the burial ground. The cemetery features curbed burial plots and slab grave covers. It remains a link to the Brandt Family and the many German immigrants who helped settled Fayette County.
